UB cheating - finally a response

Finally after almost 5 months UB have concluded their investigation into the alledged cheating and have issues the following statement. The refunds, im guessing, will be hundreds of thousands of $$. Will add more comments and thoughts in another post soon.

ULTIMATEBET ISSUES STATEMENT REGARDING UNFAIR PLAY

MONTREAL, CANADA (MAY 29, 2008) --- Tokwiro Enterprises ENRG ("Tokwiro"), proprietors of UltimateBet.com ("UltimateBet"), one of the world's largest online card rooms, today announced the results of its lengthy investigation into allegations of unfair play, which was triggered by concerns about an account named 'NioNio'. Tokwiro has worked diligently in cooperation with its regulatory body, the Kahnawake Gaming Commission ("KGC"), and with independent third-party experts to conduct a thorough investigation that included a comprehensive review of hand histories and game data, thorough analyses of software and network security, and audits of its security practices and procedures.

The investigation has concluded that certain player accounts did in fact have an unfair advantage, and that these accounts targeted the highest limit games on the site. The individuals responsible were found to have worked for the previous ownership of UltimateBet prior to the sale of the business to Tokwiro in October 2006. Tokwiro is taking full responsibility for this situation and will immediately begin refunding UltimateBet customers for any losses that were incurred as a result of unfair play.

The fraudulent activity was enabled by unauthorized software code that allowed the perpetrators to obtain hole card information during live play. The existence of this vulnerability was unknown to Tokwiro until February 2008 and existed prior to UltimateBet's acquisition by Tokwiro in October 2006. Our investigation has confirmed that the code was part of a legacy auditing system that was manipulated by the perpetrators. Gaming Associates, independent auditors hired by the KGC, have confirmed that the software code that provided the unfair advantage has been permanently removed.Throughout the investigation of this incident, Tokwiro's consistent priorities have been:

1. To permanently remove the ability to engage in unfair play;
2. To complete its investigation and come to a full understanding of what occurred;
3. To refund the affected customers; and
4. To implement measures that prevents future incidents.

The Company said, "We would like to thank our customers for their patience, loyalty and support, as well as for their understanding that we are doing everything we can to correct this situation. The staff and management of UltimateBet are fully committed to providing a safe and secure environment for our players, and we want to assure customers of our unwavering resolve to monitor site security with every resource at our disposal."

Investigation Timeline
These are the key events in the course of the incident.

* January 2008: UltimateBet is alerted to suspicions of unfair play on the part of the account "NioNio". Within 24 hours, UltimateBet contacts the KGC to provide formal notice that UltimateBet has initiated an investigation of the incident. UltimateBet subsequently forwarded a copy of all related data to the KGC.

* January 2008: The "NioNio" account and related accounts are suspended pending further investigation.* February 2008: Preliminary findings indicate abnormally high winning statistics for the suspect accounts. After discussions with the KGC, UltimateBet engages third-party gaming experts to assist with the analysis.

* February 2008: Investigators confirm that the suspect accounts are associated with individuals who had worked for UltimateBet under the previous ownership.

* February 2008: UltimateBet discovers the unauthorized code that allowed the perpetrators to obtain hole card information during live play. The code was part of a legacy auditing system that was manipulated by the perpetrators of the fraud.

* February 2008: UltimateBet immediately removes the unauthorized code and works with the KGC and with third-party auditors to verify that the security hole has been eliminated.

* March 2008: Six player accounts are confirmed to have participated in this scheme. No accounts were deleted at any point, although some account names were changed multiple times. The following account names are known to have been used in the fraudulent activity: NioNio, Sleepless, NoPaddles, nvtease, flatbroke33, ilike2win, UtakeIt2, FlipFlop2, erick456, WhackMe44, RockStarLA, stoned2nite, monizzle, FireNTexas, HeadKase01, LetsPatttty, NYMobser, and WhoWhereWhen.

* May 2008: The investigation confirms that the fraudulent activity took place from March 7, 2006 to December 3, 2007.

* May 2008: Gaming Associates certifies that the software code that enabled unfair play was removed from UltimateBet servers in February of 2008.

* May 2008: Customers affected by this incident are identified, and plans for corrective action are reviewed with the KGC.

Corrective Actions Taken
The following actions have been taken or are currently underway as a direct result of this investigation.

* The security hole identified in UltimateBet's investigation has been permanently eliminated.

* UltimateBet is establishing a state-of-the-art software Security Center that consolidates and greatly enhances existing security capabilities. The first release of the new Security Center focuses solely on the immediate detection of abnormal winnings. Gaming mathematicians, poker professionals, and security software developers have all contributed to the specifications for the new Security Center.

* UltimateBet customers are no longer permitted to change account names unless they have suffered abuse in chat rooms. Requests for changes must be supported by proof of abuse and must be approved by the Chief Compliance Officer.

* In addition to its existing security department, UltimateBet has established a new specialized Poker Security team of professionals dedicated to fraud prevention.

* The refund process will begin immediately. The accounts associated with fraudulent activity did not use an unfair advantage in all play sessions. Regardless, UltimateBet is refunding all losses to these accounts.

* Accounts related to the fraudulent activity have been disabled, and the individuals associated with those accounts permanently banned from the site.

* UltimateBet has worked closely and transparently with its governing body, the KGC and its designated expert auditors, to determine exactly what happened, how it happened, and who was involved, and has taken action to prevent any possibility of this situation recurring.

* Tokwiro is pursuing its legal options in regard to this incident.

Bankroll Volatility

I managed to play around 2,300 hands this weekend and the result was around $0.00. Im glad i've got rakeback as something to show for it. I was playing 2-3 tables $0.50/$1 for the most time. On one tabe we had broken down to 3 players when the following hand happened. We were 200b deep and it was very aggressive.

http://weaktight.com/209483

Still trying to understand whether this is a fold or call. I have posted this up on SSNL at 2p2.
$127 call to win $290. Im getting over 2-1. What can I put him on here... ?

Im saying by my turn bet I have a T, possibly a 9 or maybe some combo draw. Thinking this through now if I had a draw I would have called his Turn bet, so he can put me on a T or a 9 trying to protect against any straight or flush draws. Seeing as he holds a pair of nines I think he can put he squarely on a T. Now if I could take all the time in the world as the game I could have thought this through to this point. He knows I have a T and he is comfortable putting all his money in. This means 99,AT,KT,QT,JT,9T I dont seem him doing this with lower. At the time I thought all the draws were in his range + any 9x. Hands like JQh, JQc, 78h, 78c, AKc, AKh, JJ, QQ. -200bb dammit.

That put me on tilt a little. I left the table as I didnt want to be playing shorthanded 200bb when possibly on tilt. I was being floated a lot on other tables and my image was definately loosening up. I then got dealt a string of great cards AA/KK/AKs and played them all aggressively winning 500bb on average per big hand. I finished the session up around 300bb. Another session in the evening saw me back where I started.

Starting Poker at Micro levels $50

This subject has been floating around my head for a while now. There are still and will always be players that want to deposit the smallest amount and turn it into a fortune. From zero to hero, but as the realistic players know this is not easily done. We read stories of the players that turn $50 into $50,000, this is not the norm. This takes an incredible amount of study, skill and luck. You hear these stories but you dont hear the people that fail.

Ive coached a few players starting off the bottom rungs of the poker ladder. Almost always they start with a balance of $50. Their target... +$. This is where I believe things go wrong.

Ive been running around a 14bb/100 (7ptbb) level for the past 28k hands. This with rakeback has turned my $500 into just over $4200. This has taken 4 months. So the equivelant would be $50 into $420 over 3 months. How many beginners are willing to put the time in to play 28k hands, study and read alongside their game, analyse sessions and stick to a relevant bankroll management rule. ?? probably not many. $50 is not a fortune so winning $50 is not a life changing event. But they aim higher.

The reality is that $50 should have you playing an optimistic $5NL game. This is still only 10 buyins. The blind levels will be $0.02/$0.05, taking an optimistic 20bb/100 thats $1 per table per hour. Im assuming the beginning player will play 1-2 tables at a time so thats a profit of $1-$2 per hour. Does the player that wants to build a bankroll feel like they have achieved their goal. 3 hours of play for $3-$6. Jeez the minimum wage in the US is around $7 an hour right ?

The point im trying to make here is that beginner players with $50 should not concentrate on their bankroll as their source of their achievement. I say they should be looking at bb/100. This means buying Pokertracker or similar. At these levels you are not using PT for its HUD capability but using it for self analysis, for bb/100, position stats and hand replaying not $ made.

Making the right decisions is the key to poker. This means taking into account so much table information and if you see bets as just $2 to call and not 40bb then you will fail.

What gives you a better sense of achievement after a winning session 20bb/100 or $1 per hour ???

If you are playing for fun then it really doesnt matter. $50 is a couple of rounds of drinks. If you are playing to learn then that lesson starts with the above. If you cannot grasp the ideas above then you will not become successful poker player.
A few hands that boosted my roll last night.

http://weaktight.com/207283
This hand was a set up from the beginning. We both are highly unlikely to hold a 5 or flop a flush. His line is strong but I cant fold top set there. I think if another club appeared I would have found a fold. I put him on QcQx as he didnt raise preflop.

http://weaktight.com/207281
Here is another hand where villain didnt give me any reason to think he had AA. In hindsight this was good play by villain, getting me all in on the turn. I hit my 2 outer on the ryver. Call me a rat !!

So havent played a huge number of hands but my results have been good. I feel I havent had too much bad luck, with all hands holding up and getting lucky a few times.

The bankroll now sits at $4,260, well on track to hit the $5k mark by Jun 15th. There will be a TON of poker this weekend as the missus is away. Dammit, a few years back I would have been organising a party, hanging around with chicks and tearing up the place, but now I stay in and play online poker. Hahaha maybe I will venture out.

Ultimate Bet Scandal

Well the story finally hit the News, Views, Gossip forum after being very well edited. There has been so much work done on this, without some of the guys at 2p2 we would have never known the scale of these cheaters. Please take 5 mins out of your time to read the first post, anyone that plays online poker should know the contents of the allegation. There is talk of using the WSOP as a medium to inform the masses. Badges, t-shirts, leaflets maybe used and I feel Phil Hellmuth and Annie Duke will be wearing their ipods on full to drown out the crowd and table abuse for the site they endorse.

Fish Escaped

See picture. That's me. I played the following hand last night and I suck! I won the hand but results are irrelevant

Player is 23/6/2, no other reads and hasnt got out of line. Im playing 19/15 ish

Stacks:

UTG ($50.90)
Hero ($115.50)
BTN ($98.00)
SB ($19.00)
BB ($23.25)

Pre-flop: ($0.75, 5 players) Hero is CO

1 fold, Hero raises to $2, BTN calls $2, 2 folds

Flop: ($4.75, 2 players)
Hero bets $3, BTN raises to $9, Hero calls $6
(Fold here. There are so many hand I am behind)

Turn: ($22.75, 2 players)
Hero bets $15, BTN calls $15
(My second stab. The call says im behind right?)

River: ($52.75, 2 players)
Hero bets $31, BTN goes all-in $72, Hero calls $41
(So now i hit two pair. I ignore all reasoning and stab again just over half the pot with the thought of folding to a reraise. Well he reraised.... and said the words "Think about it")

Final Pot: $196.75
BTN shows:
Hero shows:

Hero wins $193.25 ( won +$95.25 )
BTN lost -$98.00

Now I posted this up at 2p2 in the Micro NL forum. The overwhelming reply was that firstly I played the hand bad. I so agree.

1) Im out of position against a relatively tight decent player.
2) I have shown strength and he is showing more strength
3) I have top pair ok kicker on a 3 flush board.
4) we are 200bb deep

The call on the river was the only thing I think I did correctly in this hand. It was a call of $41 to win $155. almost 4-1 odds It was also the chat that got me. maybe I read this wrong. "Think about it"

I hovered over the fold button and thought about it. The words said to me he wants me to work out that he is repping a flush, he has shown strength and I am way behind. Why would you say if you actually had a hand and wanted the other persons stack. Only Jamie Gold does this. I felt that those words alone didnt want a call, so i put the flush out of the picture. Now Im losing to a set and beating any other Ax and 2pair. Im also beating a missed flush draw. With that and the 4-1 odds I had to call.

The fact still remains though I GOT LUCKY !

Setting Targets

The difference between where we are and where we want to be is what we do.

I feel that setting a target keeps me focused and keeps me wanting to put the hands in. Its easy to just sit down and play and feel good or bad after a session but to be focused on a goal helps me to keep disciplined. Bad decisions are not just -$ they are a step backward. Also the fact that the missus gave me this short term goal makes me even more determined to make it. Setting financial goals is not for everyone. I know having this goal does not change my decision making on every hand, I also understand variance totally and I know that I could head downwards at any time but if I keep the target in my sights and analyse my play after every session I can keep trying to play my 'A' game as much as possible which in turn will lead me closer to improving as a poker player.

Setting goals need not just be a financial target. This can be in the form of 'I will play 20,000 hands of $0.25/$0.50 by the end of summer, or before I evaluate whether I am good enough for the next level.'

I think all poker players should have some sort of target or goal. I used to play with just a balance. This was just a number that would move up and down but generally go nowhere. My goal was to 'make some money'. While this may be ok for some people I think its easy to just float around the games without any sense of achievement. By setting a goal you have the risk of failure and I know which one I would rather have.

Target $5000 by 15th June

I'm still on track to hit this target. Ive made $656 in May not including Rakeback running at 16.5 bb/100 at both $0.25/$0.50 and $0.50/$1.

I have a few hands from last nights session.

http://weaktight.com/201477 - Folding KK
Villain was playing 22/7/1 I had been playing 20/11 and we had both not got out of line over approx 50 hands. Im losing to a lot of hands here. I feel an UTG limp call, flop reraise is a strong line to take on a board like that when playing me. He was a decent player and I can see TT/99/KQs showing up a lot of the time.

http://weaktight.com/201478 - Overbetting for value against me
no reads on villain. He played me perfectly here. He hits a backdoor nut flush and gets paid of by me. I had the Ace high straight and never saw the flush coming. Could anyone find a fold ? Im going to post this on 2p2 for review.

http://weaktight.com/201479 - Heads up with a maniac
The table had just broken up and I was left heads up with this guy. His stats were 57/21/3 when the table was full and I had been sitting to his left picking him off. I normally leave when the tables breaks but I couldnt resist the opportunity to play this guy. I had seen him reraise all in on different streets with mid pair and seen him call allins with ridiculous draws. This hand came after about 4 hands of HU play. For the record if a semi decent player had made the move I would have folded, but he was too much of a loose cannon and bluffs, low pairs were all in his range as much as QT,8x,JJ.

Happy Monday.

Plodding Along

Not much content due to lack of playing. The times I've sat down I've run well and now have the bankroll at another high of $3730. No hands to mention. Just some decent semi loose aggro play.

Im bang on track to make the $5k by 13th June assuming variance doesn't bite me on the ass.

So to fill the gaps of this blog for today, 1 sick 1 outer for a $320k pot.

Back on Track

I played a few thousand hands this weekend. If you remember I have a challenge set by poker girlfriend to hit $5k by June 13th. Friday saw a few beats and then a few bad plays denting the recent bankroll climb, then a great day yesterday saw a turnaround to new highs.

May Graph

So the bankroll is now $3610. If I can get the hands in then its possible to hit the $5k mark by the deadline. The thing that is holding me back is beer! Seriously I could play so many hands if I didn't go out drinking. The reason the deadline is the 13th June is that we are leaving Australia after being here for 18 months. That means a lot of people wanting to go out for beers and a lot less hands played. Dammit.

So 32 days to go $1400 to make. $43 per day.
Im running about 14bb/100 (7ptbb/100) at $0.50/$1
I need to make 1400 BB

So thats 10,000 hands ?

hmmmm

No real great hands to show from the weekend. I got a few low pocket pairs cracking Aces and also hit a few gutshot draws when I thought I could stack villain.

http://weaktight.com/193898
blind vs blind set over set 150bb I couldnt fold bottom set. Looking back this was bad play by me. Villain had been very aggressive but he could have easily had 46 or 69 for the straight and also 55/77/88. His re re reraise all in should have told me I was beat. Note to self Bottom Set Is Sometimes Beaten. mistakes like this add up.

I have been working on trying to get my vpip and pfr as close as possible. Ive been playing games like 30/25 20/15 13/13 etc. It tends to make decisions a lot easier.

**edit**
This is what I mean. I was looking to play a lot of hands tonight when 5 minutes ago the missus called me with 2 front row tickets and backstage passes to an Elton John concert tonight. Im not a huge fan of EJ but any backstage pass will be fun to go.

For some reason the hand history converter keeps screwing up on this hand so ive posted the original. The point with this hand is I flop the nut flush. I bet $1 into a $1.50 pot on the turn. His call tells me he has a flush or he is drawing to a flush. river completes a flush draw. $3.5 in the pot. No need for a pot sized bet here. An all in push will get called by a flush. $22 bet into a $3.5 pot, hahahahaha.

As promised I post my worst hand of the session. Wtf was I doing here. Its like looking at a different player. villain was 80/12 and I was had taken about $60 from him. He had chipped up from other players with ridonkulous hands so I didnt want to lose him when I hit my set of J's.
My flop bet is questionable
My turn bet is ok
My river bet is terrible.
I was hoping he had a 2pair type hand. after my bet and his push I was getting 3:1 on the call. marginal call as this was the first real aggression I had seen from him.

Got to hit these tables hard to get that $5k mark by middle of June.

(UTG was playing a terrible 70 $vpip 35 pfr 70/35. I was a little wary of the raise being UTG and maybe I should have raised. I would have had to fold to an all in shove though so I called to see what would develop. BTN raises, this could be a squeeze but with UTG calling I am priced in to call)

Flop: ($43.5, 3 players)
UTG checks, Hero bets $20, BTN calls $20, UTG calls $20
(I flop the flush with a gutshot straight flush draw. I cant give an Ad a free card and I would like to get all the money in here so I bet half the pot and hope one of them has hit, puts me on a flush draw and pushes. Unfortunately they both just call. What are we putting them on here ?? With 3 Diamonds on the board what hands would call ? 33/99/kk for a full house draw ? Adx for a flush draw ? maybe Adxd has me drawing dead. UTG's range is so wide that he could have anything here. BTN I think has 1 diamond in his hand.)

Turn: ($103.5, 3 players)
UTG checks, Hero goes all-in $87.9, 1 fold, UTG goes all-in $79.39
(Safe card for me. But here is where I think I may have gone wrong. UTG checks. I have less than a pot size bet. Any bet from me will have me pot committed and the players will know this. I cant give a free card here as pocket pairs may hit a boat and an Ad may hit a flush. So i bet all in.)

UTG shows:
Hero shows:

Hero wins $267.29 ( won +$145.39 )
BTN lost -$34.00
UTG lost -$113.39

Now lucky for me UTG could not lay his set down. Was his call on the turn incorrect ? Against this player my bet was ok. He was real bad and wouldnt have been able to lay Top PAir Top Kicker down. He was calling with a wide range of hands but against a better player, a decent regular should they have called ?

He clearly hasnt got odds to call if he thinks I have the flush. This is a great reason to bet out when you hit a flush as to hide the strength of your hand.

So if my range to him was A9d+, 33, K9, QJd, then I guess its a reasonable call.

So my question to my readers is could I have played this any better ? We can all win money from the bad players but if UTG was semi-decent player what should my line have been ? Should I have bet more on the flop thus making the turn bet easier to call ? check raise the flop ? Should I have bet smaller on the turn to bring the button in ?

Thoughts ?

UB Cheating pt.4

I think the UB scandal is about to erupt. There has been a sticky in the High Stakes NL forum on 2p2 for a while but even though this is a well read forum the masses are not found there. There are still a lot of percentage of players and 2p2ers that do not know about this scandal. 2p2 mods are about to cross post this on NVG forum (News, Views and Gossip) at the request of some members. This will really bring to light how badly UB have handled this situation.

It is proved beyond reasonable doubt that there was suspicious play at UB at the higher stakes resulting in a lot of players being cheated out of a LOT of money. UB had released a statement saying they were looking into this after the poker community put pressure on them. That was 4 months ago.

With this in the NVG soon expect to see a lot of players pull there cash from UB. Expect to see media attention highten to this and expect some large negative publicity at this years WSOP. This will hopefully force UB's hand and have them release a statement about where they are in this.

Unfortunately I cannot link the thread here as I am at work but for those that are unaware, click the 2p2 forum, select high stakes NL on the left and read the sticky post 'ULTIMATE BET Silent About Insider Cheating Allegations; Millions Suspected Stolen'

The next few weeks will be interesting. It leads me to a troublesome thought. If this is the start of the real exodus from UB then I need to remove my bankroll from AP. AP bought UB last year. There is risk that this could put the site out of action. both UB and AP. To be safe I think im going to rmove 2/3 of my bankroll for the time being. Better to be safe than sorry. I would avise anyone on UB/AP with any significant bankroll there to do the same.
